Someone recommended looking at Lego Technic parts, and sure enough I found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/Lego-RUBBER-Treads-Technic-Mindstorms-tank-track-loader-robot-caterpillar-Black-\/221364320748?ssPageName=ADME%3AL%3AOU%3AUS%3A1120&amp;nma=true&amp;si=2ON7Y6QWs4rGwEmXCoAl5utVzqQ%253D&amp;orig_cvip=true&amp;rt=nc&amp;_trksid=p2047675.l2557\">this on Ebay<\/a>\u00a0(EDIT: a helpful commenter on hackaday pointed out\u00a0this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bricklink.com\/search.asp?itemID=64953&amp;colorID=5\">much cheaper option<\/a>). I don&#8217;t know what set this came from, but they are just about the right size (a little on the small side, maybe) and the price was right. Once they arrived I got them into CAD and quickly pulled together a basic design.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jmillerid.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rover_CAD_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-795\" src=\"http:\/\/jmillerid.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rover_CAD_1-1024x693.jpg\" alt=\"rover_CAD_1\" width=\"600\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jmillerid.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rover_CAD_1-1024x693.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.jmillerid.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rover_CAD_1-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jmillerid.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rover_CAD_1.jpg 1153w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the treads this design is driven entirely by a few key components. First\u00a0are two small <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pololu.com\/product\/1248\">SM-S4303R servos<\/a>, which offer\u00a0continuous rotation without modification. After much debate I decided on this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adafruit.com\/products\/353\">lithium ion battery pack<\/a> from Adafruit for two reasons: it has 6600mAh capacity which should provide hours of use between charging, and it is known to work well\u00a0with this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adafruit.com\/products\/390\">multi-source charger<\/a>, also from Adafruit. The front wheels are attached directly to the servos, via a modified servo horn that I turned down to size on the lathe and glued into the wheel.
